Mokpo Modern History Museum 1 and 2: Different Buildings, Suggested Visiting Order

Mokpo Modern History Museum 1 occupies the former Japanese Consulate, while Hall 2 occupies the former Mokpo branch of the Oriental Development Company. To compare their histories, we suggest Hall 2, the starting-point monument on Beonhwa-ro, then Hall 1. This order differs from the city’s official itinerary.

Introduction

Mokpo is a port city that opened in October 1897. Choose by interest, not by hall number. Hall 1 has documented exhibition themes to help you plan; adding Hall 2 lets you compare the buildings’ former roles. The available records do not establish Hall 2’s interior exhibition layout.

Suggested order

The order is Mokpo Modern History Museum 2, the monument marking the starting point of National Routes 1 and 2, then Mokpo Modern History Museum 1. In the Mokpo itinerary too, Hall 2 comes before Hall 1. This is only a proposal, so check the entrances and walking routes on a map on the day of your visit and adjust the order.

1. Mokpo Modern History Museum 2

Mokpo Modern History Museum 2 stands at 18, Beonhwa-ro and occupies the former building of the Mokpo branch of the Oriental Development Company. The building was designated Provincial Monument No. 174 on 20 November 1999. The operating notice lists 09:00 to 18:00 with Mondays closed, and it also gives separate morning and afternoon times for culture and tourism docent commentary. Before going in, it is good to look closely at the building itself, to see what form the institutions that arrived after the port opened took in the middle of the city. We could not confirm the current exhibition layout.

2. Monument marking the starting point of National Routes 1 and 2

The monument marking the starting point of National Routes 1 and 2 is listed at 17, Beonhwa-ro and appears in the Mokpo itinerary as one point on the same-day course.

3. Mokpo Modern History Museum 1

An imagined red-brick, stone-trimmed early-modern government-style building

Mokpo Modern History Museum 1 is the former Mokpo Japanese Consulate building at 6, Yeongsan-ro 29beon-gil. The national heritage record lists it as a designated historic site, with a designation date of 25 September 1981 and completion in December 1900. The Mokpo tourism guide dates the establishment of the Japanese consulate to 1898, distinct from the building’s completion. The building was later used as an administrative office (isacheong), a municipal administration building (bucheongsa), city hall and a culture center, and opened as Mokpo Modern History Museum 1 in 2014 after repairs.

The exhibition is described as occupying two floors and organized into seven themes. It runs through Mokpojin, the open port, the history of resistance, foreign culture, popular culture, a Manse movement experience corner and a special exhibition on the modern city, and behind the building there is also an air-raid shelter introduced as 82 meters long. According to the city tourism guide, opening hours are 9:00 to 18:00 from Tuesday to Sunday, closed Mondays, and there is no parking lot.

Planning notes

Fees, closing days and commentary times are values read from official guidance and may change. Individual admission is listed as 2,000 won for adults and 1,000 won for youths at both Hall 1 and Hall 2, but check again with the Mokpo tourism website or by phone before visiting. Exhibitions may be reorganized, and this article does not guarantee the current display. We give no walking times or distances; it is more accurate to check them yourself on a map app.

Closing

This area is also one where, when 「Mokpo Modern History and Culture District」 was registered as cultural heritage in August 2018, the whole district rather than a single building was treated as an object of preservation.

Questions before visiting

Which Mokpo Modern History Museum should I prioritize to explore exhibition themes?

Hall 1 is the clearer choice for planning around documented exhibition themes. Seven themes are listed for Hall 1, but Hall 2’s interior exhibition layout was not confirmed, so this is not a judgment of exhibition quality.

Is Hall 2, the starting-point monument, then Hall 1 the official Mokpo route?

No. The city itinerary lists both halls before the monument, whereas this article proposes placing the monument between them. Inclusion in the same official list does not verify the actual walking route or travel time.

Why explore Beonhwa-ro as well as Mokpo’s history museums?

It offers a way to consider preservation at district scale rather than one building at a time. The area was registered as the Mokpo Modern History and Culture District in August 2018, making the relationship between the museums and surrounding streets worth considering.
