Sejong Lake Park and Sejong National Arboretum: waterfront or themed gardens?
Choose Sejong Lake Park for open waterfront paths, or Sejong National Arboretum to explore plants and themed gardens. For a combined visit, we suggest the lake park first, but check the connecting route and the conditions for your visit date separately.
Introduction
Sejong is a place that first brings to mind the label of an administrative city, but it is also a city with a large lake and an urban arboretum in its very center. The point of interest in this course is to see how water and plants become public places of rest amid a landscape of offices and apartment blocks. We linked the two places using official guidance from the Sejong City tourism website, the Sejong facilities management authority and the Korea Tourism Organization.
Suggested route
We suggest putting Sejong Lake Park first and Sejong National Arboretum second. After slowing your pace along the open waterfront, you look at plants and gardens more closely in the arboretum. Check the entrances and walking paths on a map on the day of your visit and adjust the order.
1. Sejong Lake Park
The Sejong City tourism website introduces Sejong Lake Park as the largest artificial lake in Korea, with a size equal to 62 football fields and an average depth of 3 meters. It compares the view of the National Library of Korea, Sejong and Jeonwolsan Mountain behind it to a painting. The lake has five artificial islands, including Chukjeseom festival island, Mudaeseom stage island, Mulnoriseom water-play island, Mulkkotseom aquatic-flower island and Seupjiseom wetland island, and the walking paths and bicycle paths around the lake serve as resting space for citizens. The Sejong facilities management authority introduces the park as Korea’s largest artificial lake park and an urban park. Because each island has its own character, there is pleasure in going around the lake and comparing different scenes such as a stage, water play, aquatic plants and wetlands. There is no need to hurry; linger as long as you like at a spot you enjoy.
2. Sejong National Arboretum
According to the English guide of the Korea Tourism Organization, Sejong National Arboretum was designed as Korea's first urban arboretum and built near the Sejong Government Complex. It is divided into three large sections, and each section has themed gardens suited to its purpose. A search summary of the press release issued by the Korean arboretum and garden management agency when the arboretum opened in 2020 states that it covers about 65 ha with some twenty themed exhibition gardens. However, this is material from the time of opening, so the current composition must be rechecked on the official website. If the lake park is a scene of open waterfront, the arboretum is a place to read plants slowly by theme. The plants that catch your eye will change with the season, so checking the exhibitions and open areas for your visit period in advance will make the walk more rewarding.
What to check before you go
The Sejong City tourism website lists the lake park as open from 5:00 to 23:00, with free admission and as a wheelchair-accessible attraction. The listed frequency of fountain operation differs between weekdays and holidays, and a notice from the Sejong facilities management authority announces a suspension of operations at the Haengbok waterfall and the landscape waterway, so check the latest notices before using the facilities. According to the English guide of the Korea Tourism Organization, the arboretum is open 9:00-18:00 from March to October and 9:00-17:00 from November to February, with admission until one hour before closing. It is closed on Mondays, on 1 January, and on the days of Seollal and Chuseok, and admission is paid. The distance and the way to travel between the two places cannot be confirmed from these materials, so look them up yourself on a map app.
Closing
If you plan to visit both places, put the arboretum’s last admission time in your schedule first. The Korea Tourism Organization guide lists admission until one hour before closing, a useful reference when deciding how long to stay at the lake park. Visiting the lake first is an editorial suggestion, not a verified walking route or travel-time estimate.
